Lawrence Larry Smith 82 of 1500 Blackbird Dr. West Columbia SC died Tuesday October 25 2011 in Lexington. Mr. Smith was born on July 30 1929 in Cadogan Pa youngest son of immigrant parents the late Michael and Rosa Goshouvaka Smith. Larry a football scholarship recipient was a 1952 graduate of the University of South Carolina. He was inducted into the University of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979. Regarded as one of the finest lineman in the schools history he was a two-time All-South and All-State selection as center and linebacker. Larry later played for the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers in the NFL and for Montreal and Hamilton in the CFL. His business career began with a partnership in Graham Carter and Smith Insurance Adjusters later working as an Account Executive with Merrill Lynch and ending his career with Motorola Corporation as District Manager for Mobile Communications with State and Local Government. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Chapin the USC Association of Lettermen and Shriners International Jamil Temple. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club of Columbia and a former Most Loyal Gander of the Palmetto Pond of The Honorable Blue Goose International. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 59 years Patricia R. Smith; daughters Kim Elliott of West Columbia and Tania Smith of Elgin; son Todd Smith of Chapin; grandchildren Brooke Elliott of West Columbia Kristen Smith Kaylan (P.J.) Smith Naughton and Keely Smith all of Chapin; and sister Elizabeth (Ambrose) Vulgan of Charlotte NC. He was predeceased by eleven of his siblings. We have lost an amazing friend father grandfather and Gamecock but gained an extraordinary Angel who will be watching over all of us. We love you Papap. Visitation was Sunday from 3:00 5:00 pm at Whitaker Funeral Home in Chapin. The Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 am Monday at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church by Reverend Andrew J. Vollkommer.
