Obituary

Leila Virginia (Castles) Phillips of Newberry SC (94) entered into eternal rest Sunday at White Oak Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Phillips was born Dec. 11 1914 in Winnsboro SC daughter of Herbert Lee Castles and Nellie Marie (Watts) Castles. She was a devout member of the First Baptist Church of Newberry S.C. She worked for many years at Phillips Granite Co. in Rion SC as a bookkeeper. After moving to Newberry she and her husband O.C. (Otis Cllifford) Phillips Sr. (deceased) opened their business Phillips Memorials. She continued this business into her later years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses in Newberry. Mrs. Phillips was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy Drayton Rutherford Chapter #152. She loved gardening and was a member of the Nosegay Garden Club and the Newberry Rose Society. She spent many happy hours working in her yard. She loved providing flowers for her church as well as to many friends and acquaintances. She was kind considerate and thoughtful to everyone and never uttered an unkind word. She was true to God her faith and her beliefs and instilled in her children these same values and principles.She was predeceased by two brothers Samuel Lewis Castles and Henry Wadsworth Castles and a granddaughter Laura Jean Phillips. She is survived by her two sisters Annie Elizabeth (Castles) Shull and Nellie Lee (Castles) Rutland. Her children are Pamelia Virginia (Phillips) Ivester (Roy Terry) of Seneca S.C. Gail Castles (Phillips) Zidlick (Albert J. Jr.) of Mt Pleasant S.C. and Otis Clifford Phillips Jr. of Taylors S.C. Her grandchildren are Ashley Lynn Tewell Cindy Marie Ivester Karen Gail Zidlick John Witherspoon Zidlick Matthew Howell Zidlick and Michael Clifford Phillips and three great-grandchildren Adam Patrick Tewell Lindsay Kate Tewell and Lela Gale Zidlick. She leaves behind many neices and nephews and special friends and caretakers Channie James of Newberry S.C. and Betty Jo Taylor of PendletonS.C. Funeral services were at First Baptist Church of Newberry on Caldwell St. Newberry S.C. Tuesday at 11:00 AM. Burial services were at Greenbrier Church Cemetery on Greenbrier-Mossydale Road Winnsboro S.C.Visitation were from 6 to 8 PM Monday at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.Pallbearers were John Witherspoon Zidlick Matthew Howell Zidlick Michael Clifford Phillips Roy Terry Ivester Samuel Lewis Castles Jr. and William Herbert Castles Honorary pallbearer was Albert Joseph Zidlick Jr.Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church 1020 Boundary St. Newberry SC 29108.Messages to the family may be sent via email at notes@whitakerfuneralhome.com.Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry is assisting the family.
