Obituary

Lela Kate "Katie" Kinard Suber, of Pomaria, widow of Thomas Otto "Tommie" Suber died Monday, July 1, 2019, at the age of 88. Born in the St. Philips/Jollystreet section of Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Elbert Ila Kinard and Bessie Katherine Graham Kinard. She loved that she was born on her Mama's birthday, and that she was named after her grandmother, Leila Kate Graham. She worked at Rose's Dime Store on Main Street in Newberry prior to her marriage. Katie and Tommie were married 58 years. Her family was her joy, and she always said that she had lived a blessed life. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed working in the yard and growing flowers. She loved talking with people and never met a stranger. She was a faithful member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, and was a member of WELCA. To test the progression of her dementia, she was asked to write a sentence. She wrote "Be my Valentine". A few months later, she wrote "I love you". May we be inspired by her to live a life of love. She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Grady) Yarborough; son, Russell (Phyllis) Suber; daughter, Ellen (Fred) Blackstone; granddaughter, Natalie (Erik) Lewis; grandson, Jordan Suber; great granddaughter, Finley Ann Lewis; and sister, Christine Turner. She was predeceased by sister, Vera Mae Shealy; brother, William Perry Kinard; brother, Elbert Ila Kinard, Jr.; brother-in-law, Paul Shealy; sister-in-law, Mary Kinard, and brother-in-law, Elzie Lee Turner. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Matthew Lutheran Church on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at 10:00 AM by the Rev. Steven D. Jackson. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dan Graham, Jay Harley, Stanley Shealy, Dale Smith, Vernon Smith, Danny Turner, and John Paul Whitaker. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 3, 2019, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 170, Pomaria SC 29126. The memorials will be used for the Good Samaritan Fund. Memories and condolences may be sent to the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com. Whitaker Funeral Home of Newberry is assisting the family.
