Obituary

Lou Frances Coleman Lide 98 of Newberry died Friday March 18 2011 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born on September 23 1912 in Newberry she was a daughter of the late Ancie Lee and Ora Bauknight Coleman. She was married to the late Dr. John Samuel Lide Veterinarian. Mrs. Lide grew up in Saluda and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She attended Coker College as a freshman and graduated in the first womens class from Furman University. She taught in the Newberry County public schools for over 30 years. Her first teaching position was at Pomaria High School teaching there for three years. She enjoyed attending the reunions of the Pomaria High School Class of 36 and joined them for their forty-eighth reunion on the chartered bus to Disney World. After Pomaria High School she taught fifth grade at Boundary Street and Speer Street Schools for many years. Mrs. Lide was an active member of the Garden Study club. She loved flowers and entered numerous flower and horticulture shows winning a number of awards. She and her husband donated the camellias at the front of First Baptist Church. She also loved music and enjoyed painting. Additionally she was a member of the Friday Bridge Club for over 70 years. She was the oldest member of First Baptist Church where she had been involved in many ways. She taught in the Junior Department and also taught an Adult Ladies Class worked with the Baptist Student Union was a member of the Womens Missionary Union and was very active in the Vacation Bible School. Animals were an important part of her life. She met her husband when as a young woman she brought her sick dog to the new veterinarian in Newberry. When she came back for him he was jumping up and down and Dr. Lide gave her a white Persian kitten to take as well. She is survived by her daughter and son-in law Evangeline and Bill Hendricks of Orange City Florida; her grandson and his wife John Marc Hall and Alice Romanstine-Hall of Newberry; her great-grandson Coleman Lide Hall of Newberry; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by brothers Ben Vernon Vic Weyman Brunson and Leonard Coleman and her sisters Demi Coleman Summer and Mildred Coleman Wilson. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Newberry by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment was at 2:00 PM in Pine Pleasant Cemetery in Saluda. Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry SC. The family was at the residence of John Marc Hall 2305 Main Street Newberry. Pallbearers were Carl Setzler Charles Setzler Daren Carter Doug McDaniel Joseph Coleman Jesse LaCons Hugh Wilson Dean Adams and Bill Dehihns. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church 1020 Boundary St. Newberry SC 29108 or to Pine Pleasant Baptist Church 500 Pine Pleasant Church Rd. Saluda SC 29138. The family expresses their thanks to the third floor nurses and staff at Newberry County Memorial Hospital and to the doctors and staff of Newberry Internal Medicine.
