Lu Lynn
Sexton
February 19, 1936 – June 9, 2024
Lu Lynn Galt Sexton, 88, of Newberry, SC, died peacefully on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at her residence.
Born on February 19, 1936, in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas "Tom" Hutcherson and Heppie "Happy" Littleton Galt. She was the youngest child and was preceded in death by her older brothers, Thomas "Tommy" Teasley Galt and Layland "Bubba" Littleton Galt.
Growing up, she was active in Girl Scouts of America and achieved the Curved Bar Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting from 1940 to 1963. She was a camper and staff member at Camp Greystone and Camp Juliette Low.
Lu Lynn graduated from Converse College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Then, she went on to get her Physical Therapy degree from Duke University. Lu Lynn had a long career as a physical therapist, a homemaker, a La Leche League Leader and an executive assistant for her husband, all of which are tenants of her primary role in life of taking care of others.
Lu Lynn was active in her community and was passionate about many causes. She sincerely appreciated the arts, theater, wildlife, pets and reading. Lu Lynn enjoyed precision pistol (bullseye) shooting with her husband early in their marriage and became classified as an expert. She continued in the sport with two of her daughters in Olympic-style shooting, where they earned a national record as a team. Lu Lynn was an active member of the book club at the Newberry Library. She played the piano and was especially fond of classical music. Lu Lynn sang in the church choir and participated in Circle 8 as a Central United Methodist Church member. She was active in La Leche League and was a founder of the organization's Charleston Chapter. For over four decades, Lu Lynn was an active member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Sisterhood. Upon moving to Newberry, she joined the Newberry Newcomers Club and the Newberry Garden Club, learning about the area and enhancing her gardening skills, which was a true joy for her.
Lu Lynn met the love of her life, Dr. Joel Sexton, in grammar school. They both grew up in Spartanburg, SC. They were 'the perfect blend' and celebrated 64 years of marriage, raising a beautiful family of whom she was proud.
