Obituary

Luther James L.J. Long 82 of 131 South Wheeler Ave. Prosperity died Monday November 01 2010 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born on March 25 1928 in Newberry County he was a son of the late L. Evans and Martha Cook Long. Mr. Long was a Navy Veteran of WWII having served on the U.S.S. Missouri. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church was the oldest member of the Prosperity Fire Department and was a charter member of the Prosperity Rescue Squad. Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 61 years Dorothy Dot Cannon Long; daughters and sons-in-law; Deborah L. and Phil Ruff of Prosperity Lisa L. and David Riley of Florence and Paula and Ronnie Pridgen of Marion; grandchildren and their spouses Brandon and Julie Shealy Nathan and Sydney Shealy Jennifer and Bain Chandler Josh Riley Elizabeth Pridgen and Matthew Pridgen; and great-grandchildren Sullivan Shealy Skylar Grace Shealy and Camryn Shealy. He was predeceased by a brother Carl Long. Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 PM Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eric Fink. Interment with military honors was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family did receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry. Active Pallbearers were his grandsons and Bart Chapman. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Oscar Lovelace and the Members of the Prosperity Fire Department.
