Obituary

Maj. Thomas J. Callan, USMC Ret., age 75, died peacefully at his home in Chapin, SC on January 11, 2022. Born on March 15, 1946 in New York City, NY, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Frances Moore Callan, Sr. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Chapin where he served as both a lector and Eucharistic Minister. Tom retired as a Major in the U.S. Marine Corps. His career included tours as Headquarters Company Commander, Marine Barracks 8th & I, Washington, D.C. and Commanding Office of Marine Barracks, Naples, Italy. He continued his career of government service at the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and SAIC, finally retiring as the Director of Security and Law Enforcement for the U.S. Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command. After his second retirement, his life of service continued. Always looking for ways to make a difference, he volunteered at the Riverbanks Zoo, was a former President of the Ballentine Civic Association, worked with the Palmetto Trail conservation group, helped at Harvest Hope Food Bank, and worked as a Poll Manager during elections. He found such enjoyment in his volunteer work and made an impression on all of those he met. He was larger than life in many ways – intimidating in stature and as a Marine – and also was one of the most tenderhearted and thoughtful souls you would ever meet. Whether reaching for something on a high shelf in the grocery store or greeting children and parents at the Riverbanks Zoo, he was always looking for someone to help and encourage, wherever he was. He grew up on Long Island and started sailing at an early age, which fueled a lifelong passion for boating. Tom and Ursula completed half of 'The Great Loop', which was a dream come true, in his 53' live-aboard trawler, The Great Escape. And in true Tom form, even the street they lived on, Kumatage Lane, has nautical significance and he was always fond of telling people this name meant "Light on the Horizon". Mr. Callan is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ursula B. Callan; a daughter, Paige Dullaghan (Patrick) of Poolesville, MD; sons, Patrick Callan of Jacksonville, FL, Kevin Callan (Amy) of Augusta, GA, and Sean Callan of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Barbara Callan McCue of New Bern, NC; grandchildren Aiden, Meredith, and Nolan Dullaghan and Andie Callan; nieces, Teresa Devine and Cristina Bauer; nephews, Timothy McCue and Lt Col Andrew Bauer, USMC; and a faithful and loving companion, Ziggy the Boxer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Callan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30pm on January 18, 2022 by Rev. Dennis B. Willey at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Chapin, SC. Burial will take place at a later date at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens. Memories and messages of condolence may be shared with the family on his tribute page at whitakerfuneralhome.com. Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to assist the family.
