Obituary

Margaret Sligh Hawkins, 92, died Monday, July 23, 2018 at her residence. Born March 21, 1926 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Holland L. and Eunice Willingham Sligh. She was a graduate of Newberry College and chose to use that knowledge as a stay at home wife and mother. Margaret was a long time member of Central United Methodist Church. She was an original member of the Friday Afternoon Bridge Club and a charter member of the Literary Study Club. She loved to laugh and play bridge. Her family and friends will miss Margaret's wit, her giggles, and her beautiful smile that could light up a room. She loved her friends, neighbors and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn H. and Robert Partridge of Newberry; grandchildren; Leslie Davis and wife Carrie of Cayce and Christie Davis of Newberry; great grandchild, Leland Davis; and a number of nieces and nephews. Special mention must be made of her niece, Gloria Shealy, who spoke with her every night and Frank Courtney, who was her wonderful neighbor and friend. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, William H. "Willie" Hawkins, her step-mother, Hassie Stanton Sligh, who raised her and her younger sister, Susie Long. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at Central United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. David Surrett. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 PM until 2:30 PM prior to the funeral service. Pallbearers will be Bernard Hawkins, Henry Shannon, Richard Lominick, Frank Courtney, Earl Waters, James Waters, John Paul Whitaker, and Donald Hill. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Friday Afternoon Bridge Club and The Literary Study Club. Memorial may be made to Central United Methodist Church. P.O. Box 67, Newberry, SC 29108.
