Obituary

Margaret "Marge" Foster Gagnon, 69, of Chapin, died Monday, December 17, 2018 at her residence. Born on July 12, 1949 in Albany, NY, she was a daughter of the late William and Marion Ryan Foster. Marge lived her life by two guiding principles – family is everything and carpe diem, seize the day. Although for Marge, no matter who you were you were 'family' and she welcomed you in with open arms. She was selfless in her acts, always putting others first even during her own illnesses and struggles. And she lived every moment, making memories with families, friends, and strangers every opportunity she could. In 1967, she met "her Joe" at a dance and for over 50 years they have been dancing together, building a life, raising a family, creating adventures wherever they could – be it Camp Poppy, family vacations, or even the trips to the dollar store, they were always laughing. Together, she and Joe traveled the world. Together, they were an unstoppable team and a testament to true love. For most of her career, she worked for the New York State Department of Tax & Finance which gave her the opportunity to travel the state and see countless Broadway shows. She shared her love of musical theater with her grandchildren. After retiring and moving south, she worked for the Town of Chapin for several years. She and Joe were active members of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and Marge shared her voice in the church choir, Dutch Fork Choral Society as well as with the Chapin Chirpers. Marge was the biggest supporter of her grandchildren, celebrating every success with them and rewarding them for the smallest of achievements. She was their Mimi and her legacy will live on for generations through the example and love she showered upon them. In addition to her husband, Joe, she is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Gagnon of Chapin and Lori Smith of Lexington; grandchildren, Emma Rose, Kevin Dominick, Megan Elizabeth, and Keely Margaret; siblings, Marion Rosenthal (Carl) of Latham, NY, Thomas "Tom" Foster of Watervliet, NY, J. Gerard "Jerry" Foster (Caroline) of Glenmont, NY, and David Foster (Kate) of Albany, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, William Foster, Jr. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM on Friday at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with visitation following from 7:30 until 8:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Saturday at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church by Rev. Dennis B. Willey. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, PO Box 32141, New York, NY 10087. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com. Whitaker Funeral Home of Chapin is assisting the family.
