Newberry

Margaret Elizabeth Long Neel, 92, widow of George William “Bill” Neel, of Newberry, South Carolina, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at J.F Hawkins Nursing Home on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Born in Newberry, South Carolina, on October 31, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Felton Buford Long and Cleo Epting Long Wise.

Being a “PROUD” U.S. Military wife, she supported her husband by making a home for their family in many states in which he was stationed. She took great pride in her home and was an immaculate housekeeper, often being teased that you could eat off her floors.

She was a wonderful cook and loved to cook and bake for her family; especially her grandchildren whom she adored and was so proud of.

Margaret was a faithful member of Cannon’s Creek Prosperity ARP Church and served as the assistant treasurer, as well as being on the church cemetery board for many years.

Margaret is survived by her children, Russell Neel (Rene), Beverly Neel, all of Newberry, Alan Neel of Kinards, and Laurie N. Renwick of Newberry. Lovingly known as “Nannie”, she leaves behind her seven grandchildren, Kevin Renwick, Christine Renwick Shull (Brian) of Newberry, Ryan Neel (Cassie) of Fountain Inn, Ross Neel of Newberry, Cody Neel (Cierra), Austin Neel, and Jacob Neel, all of Clinton; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived, by a sister, Carolyn L. Wicker of Newberry.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Richard, Billy, and Lionel Long, and her granddaughter, Wendi Elizabeth Senn. Nannie was so loved by her family and will be greatly missed, but will forever remain in our hearts.

A private family graveside service will be held at Cannon’s Creek Prosperity ARP Church by Pastor Brett Blackman.

The family expresses their sincere thanks to the staff of Unit Three at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home, Dr. Spencer Lovelace, her “3” special caregivers, while at home, Kendrall “Kay” Taylor, Julie Williams, and Robbie Harris, as well as Three Oaks Hospice.

Memorials are suggested to Cannon’s Creek Prosperity ARP Church Cemetery Fund at 14395 C.R. Koon Hwy, Newberry, SC 29108.

Memories and messages may be shared on her tribute wall.

Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to serve the Neel family.
