Margaret Coats Sheppard, 90, of Newberry, widow of Vernon L. Sheppard, Sr., died on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at White Oak Manor. Born on August 24, 1926 in Rock Hill, SC, she was a daughter of the late James Felton and Mildred Ryals Coats. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she had formerly served on the Church Council. In earlier years, she had been active in M.A.D.D. Margaret worked with Wometco Food Service and was co-owner of Newberry Antiques and Auction. She attended Mendenhall Auction School and worked as an auctioneer for over 30 years. She treasured antiques. Survivors include her children, Shaye Sheppard Miller (Eric) of Newberry and Vernon L. Sheppard, Jr. (Shanan); siblings, Dewey Coats (Carolyn) of Columbia and Billy Coats (Lillian) of Batesburg; grandchildren, Meghan Beall Morse (Dean), Heather S. Hunter (Chris Reppart), Hillary S. Hotz (John), Thomas Miller and Beth Miller; great grandchildren, Zachary, Noah, Will, Mason, Madison, Peyton, Kayle, Rayne, Cadency, Ellen, Mary and T.J. In addition to her husband Vernon and parents, she was predeceased by siblings, Clyde Coats, Jack Coats, James Coats, Elizabeth Jones, Ruby Hughes and Carl Coats. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday at Bethany Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert McCullum. Interment will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 25, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College St., Newberry, SC. Pallbearers will be William Sheppard, Eddie Amick, Dustin Coats, Gregg Coats, Charles Welling, Thomas Miller and Will Morse.
