Obituary

Marjorie Strickland Green, 93, died Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at White Oak Manor. Born October 20, 1922, in Smithfield, NC, she was a daughter of the late Thomas George Strickland and Rosa Howell Strickland. She was the widow of Rev. Walter S. Green, III. A graduate of Western Maryland College, Margie was also the valedictorian of her high school class. Margie was blessed with "perfect pitch" and shared her musical gifts at many church pianos throughout her years, even using that talent to attract the attention of a young man who became her husband of 66 years. She served in her role and ministry as a preacher's wife with great commitment, and she was equally devoted as a mother and "Nana" to 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. No greater love was shown than to those who gathered to eat a meal at her table. She also enjoyed traveling, sewing, playing Scrabble, watching Jeopardy and cheering for the Atlanta Braves. Margie was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her daughters Rebecca Joyce Green of Silver Spring, MD, and Mary Anne (Howard) Byrd of Lugoff; sons, Theodore T. (Ted) Green of Garrett Park, MD, Dr. John W. (Mary Sue) Green of Newberry, and Joseph H. (Janet) Green of Sequim, WA; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and four grandchildren. The family will informally receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 5 at the Whitaker Funeral Home, followed by brief services conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert McCollum. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden, Delaware. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, 1105 First Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or the Heifer International Fund, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR, 72202. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com. Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry, is assisting the family.
