Martha Caldwell Cockfield, 92, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2022. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bennie T. Cockfield to whom she was married for 63 years and her parents, Alan J. and Annie Metts Cauldwell.

She is survived by her three children, Ben Cockfield (Debbie) of Greenville, South Carolina, Julie Seay (Kevin) of Roanoke, Virginia, and Jennifer Le-Ann Pyles (Jerry) of Frederick, as well as grandchildren, Emily Seay Smith (Daniel), Ellen Seay, Katelyn Seay, Bryan Cockfield, Erin Cockfield, and John (Alex) Chestnut. Mrs. Cockfield also had two great grandchildren: Amelia Rose and Calvin Clarence Smith.

Mrs. Cockfield was born and raised in Newberry, South Carolina. She attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. where she earned a degree in education. She taught high school English and Latin in Lake City, S.C. for several years before marrying Bennie and moving to Indiana due to his job with the Department of Agriculture. After moving to Northern Virginia and raising a family, she went back into teaching, working with young children for over 20 years.

Mrs. Cockfield was active in her church where she participated in multiple groups and organizations. One of the last groups in which she was active was the Quilts and More group, which helps to make quilts for others to brighten their day and items included in monthly military packages. Mrs. Cockfield was also active in the alter preparations, ensuring that the sacrament of holy communion was prepared and ready. She and Mr. Cockfield drove many elderly members to church each Sunday so that they could worship in person. She and Mr. Cockfield were faithful servants to the St. Mark's community for many years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel.
