Martin O. "Bud" Moates, Sr. of Newberry, 81 years of age, died Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Martin was born on May 13, 1939 in Laurens County and was a son of the late Wyatt and Addie Morgan Moates. He was the last surviving member of his birth family.
He was the co-owner of Moates Contracting, a family owned business, and was also a security guard for ten years. He enjoyed meeting people and talking with them. All types of fishing were his kind of enjoyment. If someone mentioned fishing, he was ready to go. Reading God's word and sharing with others was also a pleasure for him.
He was a loving husband and father who dearly loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had a loving, tender and strong heart for family.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Reva Buchanan Moates; children, Martin Odell "Marty" Moates, II (Rose) of Summerton, SC and James Wyatt Moates (Beverly) of Gray Court, SC; grandchildren and their spouses, Dianna (Jason), Martin, III (Jennifer), Christin (Kevin), Nicky (Travis), Candace (Jamie), Anita (Phaun), C.J., and Liza (Nevin); and great grandchildren Kenneth, Austin, Kason, Lacey, Ashlyn, Enly, "Bubba", Navaeh, Jasper, Andrew, Marianna, "Peanut", Clinton, Lena, Noah and Nash. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews which he loves.
He was predeceased by brothers, W.L., Horace, Paul, George Ellis, and Otis Moates and by his sister Alverta Bright.
Visitation for will be on Friday evening, August 14 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Whitaker Funeral Home.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 15 in West End Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Michael Buchanan and the Rev. Jeff Timmerman.
Pallbearers will be Marty Moates, III, Kenneth "Gator" Moates, Kevin Spells, Jason Rucker, Jamie Hatchell and Josh Harris.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Spells, Chris Spells and C J Corley.
The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to Jamie, Josh and Candice for the love and help that was given to the family.
