Obituary

Martin "John" Wall, 60, of Chapin, South Carolina, passed away Tuesday morning, February 6, 2024, at his residence.

Born September 1, 1963, in Halifax, England, he was the son of the late Harry John Wall and the late Carol Ann Baker Wall.

Martin's parents moved to South Africa when he was a young boy as there were more opportunities there for British citizens at the time. He considered himself very much South African and embraced the lifestyle there.

One of the things Martin loved the most was sports. His love of sports came from his mum and some of his fondest memories involved watching the SA Springbok Rugby Team, The SA Protea Cricket Team, West Ham United F.C., AFC Ajax, South Carolina Gamecocks (Football, Baseball, MBB, WBB), Atlanta Braves and Carolina Panthers. He enjoyed talking about sports to anyone who would listen, and he attended as many of the games/matches as he could but if he couldn't go in person, he would watch on TV. He even did his best to explain Cricket to the Americans in his life!

Martin was a member of Running Under the Influence, a member of the Chapin Community Christian Church, and was once a member of the Newberry Rotary Club. These groups and communities shaped who Martin was and became. He found his way back to God because of the amazing work he saw through Chapin Community Christian Church and through the miracles of his self-proclaimed hero, his wife, Libby. Martin took up running in 2012 to get fit and by joining RUI, he became a member of a tight-knit group of friends who loved him as much as he loved them. Running became a way of life, a way to socialize and travel to cities he otherwise might not have gone to. RUI became more than friends, they became family. His RUI family was part of every milestone and celebration and while running wasn't always his strong suit, having a drink was, so it was a good fit for everyone.

Martin was a man that loved the world and loved to travel. Travel helped Martin acquire a great appreciation for the finer things in life. Starting in South Africa, over his entire life, he traveled and lived nearly all over the world. This gave him a life of appreciating authentic cultures, customs, and of course foods by living in so many different places. Food was a big part of Martin's life and some of his fondest memories were when he would have a "Braai", a South African expression for a cookout, with his family and friends. In these times, he not only got to enjoy a meal of favorite foods, but also the experience Some of his favorite local places were Bill & Fran's in Newberry and The British Bulldog Pub in Irmo.

Martin loved to party, spend time with friends, go to concerts, and enjoy music. He enjoyed supporting local artists, especially Jeff Lucero, Jeff Pitts and Jessica Sims of Prettier Than Matt, Brent Lundy, Brooks Herring and so many others. He always requested they play 'Creep' by Radiohead and the last song was always 'Hey Jude' by the Beatles. Martin always wanted to learn how to play the guitar but realized he didn't have the aptitude for it, so he very much appreciated the playing of others. He had very fond memories of attending concerts by Queen, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and many more.

Martin was known as a hard worker, an adventurer and a dreamer. He was always ready with a word (or more) of advice, a word (or more) of snark and sarcasm, support for any and every crazy idea someone may have and was always up for a good debate.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Wall; his son, Michael Scarth (Roxanne); his daughters, Jessica Mathias (Peter) and Jayde Sequerth (Robert); his stepdaughters, Kelsey Hart and Kristin Hart; and grandchildren, Ward and Bennett Mathias. He is also survived by his sister, Sheridan Wall (Richard) and brother, Christopher Wall (Catherine).

A memorial service for Martin's life will be held 1:00PM, Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Chapin Community Christian Church and will be announced at that time.

Martin was never one for ceremony and thrived on playing things his own way. In tribute to him, raise a glass, grab a Lucky Dip, and cheers to an amazing man.
