Martyn John Cavanaugh of 2119 Cherry Laurel Drive Newberry SC 29108 died on Monday November 9 2015 at White Oak Manor. Graveside services with military honors will be held at the Prosperity Cemetery on SC Highway 391 at 11:00 am on Thursday November 12 2015 with the Rev. David Seymore and the Rev. Matthew Titus officiating. Family members will be at the home. Born on January 1 1920 in Montreal Canada he was the son of the late John Martyn (Jack) and Laura MacDonald Cavanaugh. He grew up in Clyde NC. Cavanaugh graduated from Riverside Military Academy. During World War II he served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific. Upon his return he attended Mars Hill College and he graduated from N.C. State University with a major in Forestry. At both colleges he distinguished himself on the football field. Champion Paper Company sent him to Newberry SC as district manager of their forest products industry. In 1974 Cavanaugh opened his own business Forest and Land Enterprises Inc. as a consulting forester land management and land surveyor. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Verna Kohn Cavanaugh of the home; two sons and their spouses Jeffrey and Elaine Cavanaugh of Chesapeake VA and Mike and Jeanne Cavanaugh of Columbia and grandchildren; Kathryn Cavanaugh and Zach Cavanaugh of Columbia SC and Jeffrey Cavanaugh Jr. and Lucille Laura Cavanaugh of Florida; two nephews Chip Powell of Asheville NC and Jack Cavanaugh of Lititz PA. He was predeceased by two sisters; Muriel C. Powell and June C. Dulaney. Cavanaugh was a member of the Society of American Foresters SC Society of Land Surveyors Past Chairman of the SC State Tree Farm Committee member of the advisory board of the Central Midlands DEHEC board member of the Saluda River Water Basin Association past president of the Newberry County Historical and Museum Society chairman and treasurer of the Newberry County Beautification Committee chairman of the Newberry County Tri-Centennial Celebration and member of the Board of Visitors of the Medical University of SC and the Newberry Lions Club. Cavanaugh enjoyed vegetable gardening dancing playing bridge hunting tending to his cattle at his Saluda farm and watching on TV the ACC football basketball games and championships.
