Marvin G. "Pete" Petersen, age 89 of Chapin died Wednesday, May 4, 2021 in Lexington. He was born May 21, 1932 in Virginia, NE, a son of the late Mark L. and Hanna R. Petersen.
Growing up on a farm and learning the values of family and hard work, Marvin's life took a new turn when he was drafted to serve in the Air Force during the Korean War where he worked on the flight line. With his new bride and love of his life Shirley H. Petersen they were stationed in Japan for years. Marvin's wartime experiences led him to attend Indiana Technical College where he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering. As an engineer Marvin worked for several companies and had his own business before entering retirement.
Being an engineer Marvin was a fix-it guy. He was always in the shop tinkering with something or working on the yard. He never cared too much for travel (except the annual trek to visit family in NE and MO) but he loved good food and family get-togethers. Especially when it turned into playing cards late into the night. He was a longtime member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church where he and Shirley served on any committee that needed help. They especially enjoyed the Young at Heart group that took them on apple runs and hosted game nights.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years and a daughter, Kathy Anderson (Arlen) of Chapin; a son, Mark Petersen of Lexington; grandchildren Kendall Anderson and Alex Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held by The Rev. Larry Hagerty at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 4:00 PM on Monday, May 9, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Following the burial, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.
For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the American Brain Foundation, 201 Chicago Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55415 or to St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 215 St. Thomas Church RD, Chapin, SC 29036.
