Obituary

Mary Ellen Clamp Layton, 89, of Newberry died Monday March 6, 2023 at White Oak Manor.

Born on April 22, 1933 in Newberry she was a daughter of the late William Boyd and Ellen Spotts Clamp.

Mary Ellen worked for many as a secretary in the Newberry County School District. She was a member of O'Neal Street United Methodist Church in Newberry and also attended Connie Maxwell Baptist Church in Greenwood and Mountain Rest Baptist Church in Mountain Rest. Her pride and greatest joy was working alongside her husband, Charles, at the Cherry Hill Camp Ground of the US Forest Service. Together they served as hosts and director for 19 years.

Mary Ellen was a beautiful lady, inside and out. She was a good mother and housewife and she made sure her children knew they were loved.

She is survived by her sons, Charles E. Layton, Jr. (Cheryl) and Lew Layton; daughters, Lynn Layton (Ed) and Mary Hawkins (Tony); grandchildren, Tony Hawkins, Jr., Amy Longshore, Peyton Batson, and Amber Ellis; great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; siblings, William B. Clamp, Jr., Alton B. Clamp, G. Michael "Mike" Clamp, Marian C. Teseniar; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Charles E. Layton, Sr; and an infant sister, Maybry Evelyn Clamp.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Sam Marcengill on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 11 AM at West End Cemetery.

The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the team at White Oak Manor for the care of Mrs. Layton, and to Ms. Sarah Lollis for being such a good roommate and watching over their mother.
