Mary Leslie Williams, 83, of Prosperity, died Friday, August 4, 2017 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born on March 29, 1934 in Atlanta, GA, she was the daughter of the late Alpheus E. and Lucy Sturdivant Leslie of Atlanta.
A member of the Scottish Clan Leslie, the American Guild of Organists and strong supporter of theater and arts, Mary was a public school teacher in GA and SC, an avid reader and supporter of SC ETV and PBS. She thoroughly enjoyed watching hummingbirds and visiting the Spoleto and Piccolo Festivals in Charleston. She also formerly taught piano and was an organist and choir director over many years. Mary graduated from Erskine College in 1955 with a BA in Education and earned a Master in Education from USC.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Rev. James H. Williams of Prosperity; daughters, Jeanne Williams of Simpsonville, Leslie Hicklin (Osmon "Bud") of Clemson, Laura Williams of Prosperity, and Lucy Nelson (Edward) of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Daniel Empey and Breanne Rogers of Portland, OR, Alex Hicklin of Charleston, Evan Hicklin of Clemson, Jayce Nelson of Ft. Collins, CO, Riley Nelson and Kaitlyn Nelson of Colorado Springs, CO; great-grandchildren, Graham Rittenhouse, Ruby Rogers and Jemma Rogers, all of Portland, OR; brother, Donald Leslie (Marion) of Abbeville; nieces, Cathy Harman (Nicholas "Nick") and Rev. Mary Anderson (Frank), all of Columbia; great-nephew, Karl Harman of Columbia; great-nieces, Elise Anderson of Columbia, Colleen Anderson of Hickory, NC, Susan Vaughn, Allison Candler and Audrey Vaughn, all of Madison, GA.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Edward Leslie and A.E. Leslie, Jr.; and nephews, William "Bo" Leslie and Henry "Hank" Leslie.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 195 Amicks Ferry Rd, Chapin, SC by the Rev. Dennis Willey.
Burial will be at 4:00 PM Wednesday in Long Cane Cemetery,194 Highway 20, Abbeville, SC 29620.
