Obituary

Melvin "Mel" J. Belter, a resident of Chapin, peacefully passed away on October 20, 2023, at the age of 87. He was born on May 31, 1936, in Milwaukee, WI, the cherished son of the late Alphonse Belter and Eleanore Fadrowski. Mel shared 49 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Cynthia "Cindy" Gore Belter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Dennis B. Willey at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 11:00 AM. Following the service, Mel will be laid to rest in the church cemetery, with a time of repast to follow.

Friends and well-wishers are invited to pay their respects on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home in Chapin.

Mel proudly served as an Air Force veteran, enlisting at the tender age of 17 to support his country during the Korean War. While his initial dream was to become a pilot, age restrictions led him towards a career in aviation electronics engineering. After his military service, he pursued a career as a professional land surveyor and eventually established his own successful company, Belter & Associates, Inc. His dedication to excellence earned him immense respect within his profession and the broader business community.

Mel was not only a respected professional but also a well-known figure in the Chapin community, often recognized by his distinctive Stetson cowboy-style hats.

Deeply devout and in the service of God, Mel was among the founding members of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. He played a pivotal role in its establishment, including locating the property on Amick's Ferry Road in Chapin, SC. He also contributed his expertise to designing the original church building where Mass was held for many years.

Above all else, Mel was a devoted husband, a supportive father, and a loving grandfather. Family held a special place in his heart, and he always stood by them, unwavering in his commitment to high standards and values. Mel possessed a tender heart and a creative spirit, finding beauty in the world around him and expressing it through his artistic creations.

Mel leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication. He is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia "Cindy" Gore Belter, his sons Chet H. Belter, Chad J. Belter, his daughter Shawn Belter Meeh, and his adoring grandchildren: Rachel Belter, Lauren Meeh, Brayden Meeh Dillon (Kade), Ava Meeh, and Cullen Belter.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Our Lady of the Lake building fund at 195 Amick's Ferry Road, Chapin, SC 29036.

Memories and messages of condolence may be shared with the family here on his tribute wall.

Whitaker Funeral Home is privileged to serve the Belter family during this time in honoring Mel's memory.
