Melvina Hobson Sprunt Busby ("Mel"), 97, of Newberry, SC, died January 18, 2021 at her residence. She was born on August 4, 1923 in Anderson, SC, the daughter of the late Paul Pearson and Thrace Campbell Hobson. She was predeceased by one sister, Claris.
Melvina was a graduate of Anderson College (1942) and Winthrop College (1944) and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (1948). She served as Director of Christian Education in Presbyterian churches in Greenville, SC, Columbia, SC and Raleigh, NC. A devout Christian and lifelong Presbyterian, she held leadership positions in local churches (Elder, VBS Director, Sunday School teacher, Women of the Church leader) and in the wider Presbyterian Church, USA (Moderator of the Shenandoah Presbytery, Moderator of the Synod of the Virginias, General Assembly Commissioner, Board of Annuities and Relief, Board of Pensions and the South Carolina Presbyterian Homes Board of Trustees.) She was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church and received an Honorary Life Membership in Aveleigh Presbyterian Women. Melvina also served as a Girl Scout leader, Newberry County Memorial Hospital volunteer, and was active in a number of local and civic organizations.
Melvina was first married to the Reverend James Sprunt, who predeceased her in 1981. She is survived by two children: Ruth Sprunt Johnson (Bruce) of Salem, VA, and James Sprunt, Jr. of Harrisonburg, VA. She was later married to Albert Foster Busby, who predeceased her in 2009. She is also survived by Albert Foster Busby, Jr. (Deborah), Paul Hobson Busby (Kathy) and Mary Amelia Busby Hutcherson (Jay). Grandchildren are Timothy Sprunt Johnson (Lauren), Charles Campbell Johnson (Anne), Albert Foster "Bo" Busby, III (Maria), Christie Lynn Long Brown (Marshall), Paul Hobson Busby, Jr. (Kate), Samuel Jones Hutcherson, Jr., Albert Joseph Hutcherson and Preston Wayne Cook. Great grandchildren are Philip Campbell Johnson, Abigail Elizabeth Brown and Lila Katherine Brown.
An enthusiastic card player, she loved nothing better than an afternoon Bridge or Shanghai game with friends. After moving to the Springfield Place community in 2003, Melvina began an exercise class for residents and continued to lead it until her death. She inspired others to remain active and engaged throughout their lives. She cared deeply for her God, her family, her friends and her community.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church in Newberry, SC. The family will receive visitors following the service.
