IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael (Mike) Richard
Tracey
May 7, 1934 – December 13, 2022
Michael (Mike) Richard Tracey, 88, of Newberry died Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at White Oak Manor.
Born May 5, 1934, in Cliffwood, New Jersey, he was the youngest child of Vincent and Stella (Lambertson) Tracey. He is predeceased by his six siblings, Helen (RI),Vincent (NJ), William (Bill, SC), John (NJ), Francis (NJ) and Katherine (FL). He leaves behind many nephews and nieces, among those being Frederick Stringer (NJ), Theresa Duane (MA) and Monica Williams (SC).
From an early age, Mike began to work as a means of survival. He began to develop a fierce work ethic that followed him throughout his life. He joined the Army and fought in the Korean War, using that same work ethic. He operated amphibious DUKWs during his tour in that war and regretted that he was still unable to have one of his own.
When Mike returned stateside, he held several jobs before finding his career path driving big rigs. It suited him well, not one to sit still very long. He drove the Eastern coast line until he knew every road like the back of his hand. As his life progressed in that work, he was asked to write safety manuals for the driving classes of 18-wheelers. After he "retired", he worked for a training school in Newberry, SC, training other semi-truck drivers. That job was in his blood and he talked of his experiences on the road until the very end.
After calling Newberry his home, he was determined to stay active in the community. He worked as a bailiff in the courts in Newberry. His artistic nature with photography and painting allowed him to design the stage props for the Community Players. Even while relaxing at home, he devotedly read books, mostly histories.
Never meeting a stranger, he formed many friendships. He met two of those friends, Ron Halfacre and Hugh Gray, every morning to play their own brand of trivia. He also volunteered his time at the visitors center, located below the old court house. He always made sure to have fresh coffee made for any visitor that stopped by. Although I suspect he drank most of it himself.
Mike was a friend to many in Newberry. This town held a special spot in his heart, despite the many places he traveled. He will never be forgotten and will be forever in our hearts.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family here on his tribute page.
