Mildred Long Kramer, beloved mother, wife, educator, and administrator, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024, at the age of 85. She was born on August 28, 1938, in Newberry, South Carolina. Her parents were Guy Long and Katherine Neel, both have passed on. She spent the first part of her life, growing up and going to school in Silverstreet, SC.
She married James Henry Unger after they attended and graduated from Newberry College. He joined the Air Force and they travelled the world, from South Carolina to Texas to California, then to Turkey, Montana, Louisiana and finally back home to South Carolina.
Mildred dedicated her life to the field of education, beginning her career as an elementary school teacher and later being promoted to Principal and then transitioned into SC State Education Administration. She finished her education career in Sumter County as part of the talented and gifted program. Her passion for nurturing young minds and fostering a love for learning touched the lives of countless students and colleagues throughout her career.
She is survived by her loving children, James "Jim" M. Unger (Trish) and Erin U. Lin (Gerard), her brother, Marion G. Long Jr. (Elaine), and her grandsons Lucas Unger and Preston Unger who continue to cherish her memory and legacy. Mildred's kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to education will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A small memorial service to celebrate Mildred's life will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 10am EDT, at Silverstreet Lutheran Church Cemetery – 120 Long Street, Silverstreet, SC 29145 where family, friends, and colleagues will come together to honor her contributions to education and her enduring impact on the community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Alzheimer's Association at Alzheimer's Association | Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia Help.
Mildred Kramer's spirit will live on through the lives she touched and the countless students who benefited from her guidance and passion for learning. Her legacy of kindness and dedication will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
