Obituary

Norman G. Way, Jr., 93, passed away May 10, 2022 following a long period of illness. He was born in Greenwood, SC on January 7, 1929, the only child of Margaret Lee Way and Norman G. Way. The family Resided in Rock Hill, SC, where Norman lived for more than four decades before moving to Prosperity, SC. Norman worked in construction for many years, and retired from Georgia Pacific. He was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church and participated enthusiastically in several mission trips to Panama, Colombia, and Bolivia, as well as several domestic missions. He took no greater pleasure in these trips than when his son and grandson accompanied him. He was also active in Wightman's Warm Projects and spent many hours constructing and painting props for Vacation Bible School with his artist wife. Norman had a tremendous love of flying, earning his pilots license as a teenager. He served in the Civil Air Patrol during WWII, and continued flying as much as possible through the years. He and his wife built their home themselves, hiring out only tasks requiring professional contractors. Highlights of his life include hosting amazing Christmas family gatherings, teaching the grandsons to waterski (sometimes 5 abreast), camping at Edisto Island, parachuting, photography, working on projects in his shop, painting oil portraits of lighthouses, raising pot bellied pigs as house pets, and officiating at two of his grandson's weddings. He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Bebe Gower Way of Prosperity; three children, Charlotte Way Slate (Charles) of Greenville, SC, Nancy Way Rummage (Wayne) of Albemarle, NC, and Norman G. Way, III (Karen) of Gaffney, SC; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. There will be a private family service in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wightman United Methodist Church, 302 N. Main St., Prosperity, SC, 29127. Messages and memories may be shared with the family here on his tribute page. Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to assist the family.
