Obituary for John Woody Cornwell, Jr.

John Woody Cornwell, Jr., known as Woody, was born Jan 13, 1968 in Newberry, SC and passed away April 12, 2016 in Savannah, GA.
Woody was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joel Hardy and Allie Mae Cornwell and William Meadors and Mildred Minick.
He is survived by his parents, John Woody Cornwell, Sr. and Elaine M. Cornwell of Newberry, SC, a brother, Mark Cornwell (Kelly) of Decatur, GA and nephew, Harry Cornwell, aunts, uncles, many cousins and many friends.
Woody graduated from Dalton High School in Dalton, GA in 1986 and attended the University of Georgia where he became a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He received his Bachelor degree in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and his Master of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) from Georgia State University.
Woody was a life scout who loved the outdoors and camping. He also had a love for music, art, cooking and gardening.
In 1997 he co-founded Eyedrum, a music and art gallery in Atlanta, GA, a gallery for the promotion of upcoming artists. He mentored many young artists through internships at Eyedrum.
Throughout his career in Atlanta, he taught art at Atlanta College of Art, SCAD Atlanta, Callonwalde Art Center and Chastain Art Center. He was a board member at Art Papers Magazine and sold subscriptions throughout the world for Art Papers.
Woody moved to Savannah two years ago and was teaching art at the Telfair Museum while he continued promoting his own work.
A service to honor and remember Woody will be held on April 30th in downtown Newberry, at 1208 Main St. The gathering will begin at 2:30 pm with a service at 3 pm. Woody’s lifelong art will be on display.
The family request memorials for Woody be sent to Newberry College, 2100 College St., Newberry SC, 29108 designated for the newly established “Woody Cornwell, Jr Art Scholarship”. This scholarship will be needs based and will be awarded to an Art Major at Newberry College.
