Paula Lynn Johnson Harshaw, 56, of Newberry, SC died on October 26, 2021 in the Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Paula was born on August 29,1965 in Greenville, SC to Bobbie Jean Jordan Johnson and the late Charlie William Johnson.
She attended Converse College where she completed her Bachelor of Music, Violin Performance, as well as her Master of Music in Violin Performance. While at Converse, she was a member of the Converse Chamber Orchestra, the Spartanburg Philharmonic, and a founding member of the Tower Quartet. She was a performing artist in the Southeast for many years as a member of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, Greenville Symphony Chamber Orchestra, South Carolina Philharmonic, Spartanburg Philharmonic, Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium, Augusta Opera Orchestra, and Brevard Chamber Orchestra.
Additionally, for many years Paula taught students of all ages, from 3 years old to 70 years old. She first taught in Laurens starting in 2000. After teaching for three years, she took a break to be home with her daughter. She then taught for several years at Presbyterian College before moving to Boundary Street Elementary School in Newberry. She returned to Laurens District 55 in the fall of 2015 to resume her teaching responsibilities at Laurens Middle School and Sanders Middle School. She returned to Laurens High School in fall of 2019.
Throughout her life, Paula performed as much as her schedule allowed. She was first violinist with the Starlight String Quartet performing throughout the upstate and midlands. During her years of performing in Greenville, Paula had the opportunity to perform with such greats as Josh Groban, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Dianne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Henry Mancini, The Moody Blues, Crystal Gayle, The Kingston Trio, Marc O'Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, Luciano Pavarotti and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Paula was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, often lending her musical talents to services at the church, and a member of the Salt Sunday School class. Although she wasn't a member of First Baptist Church in Laurens, she also felt at home there. She was also a member of the Carolinian Society.
Paula was absolutely and completely devoted to her family. She enjoyed family trips to the South Carolina coast and the North Carolina mountains. She was up for all kinds of fun as long as all of the family members were having fun too. Dance recitals, especially the annual Elf Shows, softball games, volleyball matches, family birthday parties, and holidays were always thoroughly enjoyed.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Clinton "Clint" Harshaw; daughters, Vanessa Charlene Harshaw and Morgan Christine Harshaw both of Newberry; her mother, Bobbie Johnson of Greenville; sisters, Melinda Jean Beeco (Danny) of Anderson and Crystal Charis Burger (Chris) of Greenville; brother-in-law, Clay Edgar Harshaw (Emily) of Greensboro, NC; nieces, Cathryn Burger, Ashley and Anna Harshaw; nephews, Charlie and Chad Burger; and other family members, Dan and Louise Vernon of Atlanta, GA, Betty and Bob Kale of Taylors, SC and Nancy Poole of Myrtle Beach, SC, Chris Capelle of Palo Alto, CA, and Macon Harshaw of Northridge, CA.
She was predeceased by her father and by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles Edgar and Constance "Connie" Harshaw.
Visitation for Paula will be on Sunday, October 31, 2021 from 5:00 – 6:30 pm at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5:00 pm on Monday, November 1, 2021 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry with the Rev. Matthew Titus officiating. Burial will follow the service in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Doug Wallace, Mark Ebert, Doug Daniel, Sam Howell, Jim Channell, Jamie Hyatt, and Darryl Starkey.
Honorary pallbearers will be Katherine Reid, Rebekah Hinton, Laura Kay Rumfelt, Kevin Dove, Andy Sidden, Christy Mills, Cindy Leitzsey, Sharah Clark, Blair Neaderhiser, Tina Pulley, Bruce McClain, Carole Roosevelt, and Adair Rogers.
