Whitaker Funeral Home
4:00 - 5:00 pm (Eastern time)
Roland “Lewis” Hawkins Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge Hospital.
Born March 6, 1943, in Newberry, South Carolina, to the late Roland Lewis Hawkins Sr. and Gladys Bowers Hawkins, Lewis lived a life marked by intelligence, quiet strength, deep love for his family, and pride in the life he built. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert Guy Davis and Dorothy Harmon Davis.
Lewis graduated from Newberry College with a degree in Chemistry and was known by those who loved him as an exceptionally brilliant man. Throughout his career, he held numerous patents and was deeply respected for his innovative mind and dedication to his work.
Yet beyond his accomplishments, Lewis found joy in the simple and meaningful things—time on the water, quiet moments outdoors, and being with those he loved most. He loved sharing stories and memories from earlier years, which he spoke of with great pride and joy.
Some of his happiest memories were connected to the Margaret Hunter Park pool, where he served as a lifeguard, taught swim lessons, and proudly shared stories of his diving skills. Time spent at the pool with family and friends, especially alongside his beloved wife, remained close to his heart throughout his life. He also loved dove hunting and created treasured memories teaching his family how to water ski.
Known affectionately as “Hawk” and “Rip” to many friends, and “Louie” to his loving wife, Lewis will be remembered for his quiet strength, sharp mind, gentle spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Donna Davis Hawkins; his children, Laney Hawkins Cobb (Jerry) and Robert Hawkins; grandchildren, Davis Pollard Till (Tyler) and Claudia Elizabeth Pollard; and his cherished great-granddaughter, Dorothy James “Dottie” Till, whose presence brought him renewed joy and a childlike spirit in his later years. He is also survived by many family members and friends who loved him deeply.
The family will gather for visitation Saturday afternoon, May 16, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Loved deeply. Remembered always. Forever in our hearts.
The family is grateful for the love, prayers, and kindness shown during this time.
Memories and messages may be shared on his tribute wall.
