Rev. Harry Weber 84 of 2000 Springfield Place Newberry widower of Virginia "Jenny" Graham Weber died Tuesday November 4 2003 at his residence.Rev. Weber was born on January 18 1919 in Charleston SC a son of the late William and Marguerite Schumacher Weber. Rev. Weber served churches in Cameron Saluda and Whitmire.Rev. Weber was as Army veteran of War World II serving with the rank of Captain. For his actions he received the Bronze Star Medal Army of Occupation Medal European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and American Campaign Medal.Rev. Harry Weber joined the Newberry College faculty as an assistant professor of religion in 1959 and was named the Chaplain in 1962; he also served as Dean of Students from 1966-69. He resigned his Newberry College position in February 1979 to become pastor of Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church in Saluda.A 1942 graduate of Newberry College Pastor Weber was an active supporter of the College throughout his career. In recognition for his loyal support the Newberry College awarded him the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 1980 and the Thomas Epting Alumnus-of-the Year Award in 1995. The Newberry College Lettermen's Club inducted Pastor Weber into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991 for his contributions as a student athlete and football player. In 1999 the College dedicated its first building devoted entirely to campus ministry in Pastor Weber's honor and named the building the Weber Ministry House. The South Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) awarded its first Bishop James S. Aull Award in 1996 to Pastor Weber for outstanding ministerial service to the Church and to Newberry College.He and his wife Virginia Graham Weber—a 1944 graduate of the College have also established the endowed Graham-Weber Scholarship to be awarded annually to an outstanding football player. In March 2001 Pastor Weber received The Order of the Palmetto South Carolina's highest award for "his tireless efforts to promote literacy in South Carolina." His interest in and work with the South Carolina Literacy Council began in the late 1960's when he was still Newberry College's Chaplain. At The Order of the Palmetto Award Ceremony James Lander South Carolina Comptroller General noted that "Pastor Weber is the heart and breath of the literacy movement" and how he on behalf of the College the Newberry Jaycees and South Carolina's Literacy Councils spent four decades traveling the state to organize workshops to train teachers and students in the Laubach 'Each One Teach One' method of literacy training."Pastor Weber received his Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina and his seminary training from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia.Rev. Weber is survived by a niece Martha Miller and her husband Ben Miller of Laurens and a nephew Charles Weber and his wife Sharon Weber of Little Mountain.Funeral services for Rev. Harry Weber will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.Visitation will be from 5:00 to 6:30 P. M.
