Obituary

Richard Maxwell Kenan of Chapin, SC, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2020. Richard was born on March 10, 1940, in Greensboro, NC to Judson Glenn and Archel Clifton Kenan. He graduated from Asheboro High School in 1958 where he played quarterback for the football team. One of his favorite sayings was "if you can touch it, then you can catch it." He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1962 and was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. He joined the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation and was stationed in Norfolk, VA. Richard retired from active duty as a Lieutenant junior grade but continued his military service in the Navy Reserve. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina in 1969 and moved to Newberry, SC where he began his 50-year career in the practice of law. His legal pursuits included serving as Public Defender and teaching business law at Newberry College. He also served the Newberry district as a State House of Representatives member. Richard was active in Lake Murray Presbyterian Church and the Chapin Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an avid sportsman and fitness enthusiast. He relished his time on Lake Murray and at Sugar Mountain with family and friends. His favorite sports were tennis and skiing. His proclivity for art and antiquities led to adventures to distant cities and museums around the world. Richard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He took great interest and pride in the endeavors of his children and grandchildren. As a result, he enthusiastically cheered for his progeny in soccer, football, softball, and tennis. He rooted loudly for his Tar Heels, Gamecocks, and Tennessee Volunteer football. Richard is survived by his wife June and sons Laine (Melinda) of Atlanta, GA and Kemper (Anna) of Greenville, SC; his stepson Dixon Brooks (Mary) of Lexington, SC; his brother Bill (Ometa) of Asheboro, NC and their daughters Kim and Kelley; and his grandchildren Alex and Claire Kenan, Will and Anna Catherine Kenan, and Spencer and Paxton Brooks. He was predeceased by brother Lee Kenan (Linda) of Beaufort, NC. He will be remembered as bright, charming, and driven. He looked for the good in every person and was forever greeting people, known and unknown, as if he were continually running for elected office. For an opportunity to honor and remember Richard, the family suggests that friends visit Whitaker Funeral Home in Chapin between the hours of 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM on Thursday, January 7 and at the Newberry location between the hours of 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM on Friday, January 8.
