Richard Epting Long, of Newberry, SC entered into eternal rest on June 12, 2016 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. He was 84 years old.
Born on October 3, 1931, in Newberry County, he was the eldest son of the late Felton Buford Long and Cleo Epting Long Wise.
Richard was a Korean War Navy veteran serving two tours of duty in Korean waters aboard the USS Antietam CV-36 and the USS Yorktown CV-10. He retired from Monsanto Greenwood as a power maintenance foreman and then retired from Fluor-Daniels, Inc., Richard served his church and community organizations in numerous ways during his active life.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and also a member of the Bush River Fire Department, the Bush River Young Farmers and the Bush River Activity Association.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Nicholson Long; his children, Cynthia Long Garris (John Garris) of Mills River, NC, Brian Long (Tracy A. Long) of Newberry, SC and Gary Long (Shannon Long) of Surgoinsville, TN; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; his beloved dog, Missy; two sisters, Ms. Carolyn Wicker and Ms. Margaret Neel, both of Newberry, SC and many loved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by an infant son, Felton Buford Long; his father and mother; stepfathers, L. Robertson Harmon and G. Herman Wise; and brothers, William (Bill) Long and Heyward Lionel Long.
Services for Mr. Long will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 11:00 am at Saint James Lutheran Church, Jalapa, SC.
Visitation will be at Whitaker Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
PalllBearers will be Richard Garris, Rodney Long, Nicholas Long, Hunter Long, Randall Jones, Christopher Counts, Mark Long, and Donnie Nicholson, Honorary Pallbearers will be Roger Stamey, Dixon Brooks, CJ Bishop, Ernie Counts, Dean Jackson, and members of Bush River Fire Department.
