Richard P. Dick Foster 83 of 302 N. Wheeler Avenue Prosperity died Tuesday October 11 2011 at White Oak Manor in Newberry. Born on April 14 1928 in Cleveland County (Kings Mountain) NC he was a son of the late Joseph B. and Sarah Cansler Foster. Mr. Foster served as a Seaman First Class in the United States Navy and was a veteran of World War II. While in the Navy he participated in the United States Navy Global Good Will Tour that circled the globe. Mr. Foster came to Newberry where he graduated from Newberry College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1952 and where he also played football for the Newberry College Indians. He was a retired Director of Postal Training with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a dedicated member of Wightman United Methodist Church and previously served as a volunteer firefighter for the Prosperity Fire Department. Mr. Foster was a member of the USS Toledo Association the U.S. Postal Retiree Association and a charter member of the Mid-Carolina Country Club. He served on the Fox Hunt Towne House Board and the Sapphire Valley NC Master Association Board for 21 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Jennylee C. Foster; sons Dr. Richard P. Rick (Lesa) Foster of Wadmalaw Island and Sheriff Lee (Carol) Foster of Newberry; grandchildren Ashlee (Carlos) Parra Layna Foster Jenna Foster Matthew Foster Joseph Foster and Amelia Foster; and great-grandchildren Nicolas Parra and Lucus Parra. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister Joyce F. Phifer. Family and friends were invited to attend the inurnment with military honors at the Prosperity Cemetery on Saturday at 11:00 A.M.. Celebration of Life services were held on Sunday October 16 2011 at 3:30 P.M. at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Turner. The family did receive friends at a reception following the service at the Christian Life Center at the church. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Frances Asbury Sunday School Class at Wightman United Methodist Church.
