Obituary

Richie Allen Warren, 77, husband of Toni Willingham Warren, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2021 at Lexington Medical Center after an extended battle with COVID. Richie was born on September 5, 1944 in Newberry, a son of the late George Roy Warren and Mary Ruth Allen Warren. Athletics were an important part of Richie's life. His first date with Toni, was at a Newberry High School basketball game, in which he was playing. He was the starting pitcher for the Newberry High School baseball team in which they became the 1962 State Baseball Champions. He was drafted by Milwaukee Braves at the age of 17 but because of his age his mother would not sign so he went to North Greenville on a basketball scholarship. His love was baseball, so he left school to play semi-professional baseball with the Prosperity Pirates. He continued to love sports, especially baseball and golf. He found joy and fulfillment in coaching and mentoring his children, grandchildren and nephew, Joey in baseball/softball. And over time, Richie combined his love of Christ with his love for sports by serving as Chaplain for numerous years with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Richie was raised to have a strong faith and to invest in his community. He was a lifelong member of College Street Church where he continued to serve in his faith as a deacon. He was also an active Member of Amity Lodge #87, AFM. He later graduated from USC with a degree in industrial engineering that advanced his career in the textile industry. After retirement, he followed his passion of furniture restoration and together with his son opened Warren Restorations, LLC. Richie shared his talents and skills with the community through this business and can only be described as a true craftsman. Richie was known by family and friends as "Pop" and/or "Buddy". To his sons, he was both Dad and best friend. If you knew him, you know that he loved to ask, "Has anybody told you that they love ya today?" And whether he knew you or not, if the answer was "no" he was quick to respond "well I love you." Richie will be remembered as a Christian man, a Loving man, and a mentor. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Toni Willingham Warren; his two sons David (Traci) and Clark (Cindy), granddaughter, Katelyn Warren and great-grandson, Clayden; grandson Colby Haralson, all of Newberry; granddaughter, Logan Sturgis (Tyler) and great-grandsons Hendrix and Maddux of Duncan, SC; grandson Brock Glover (Pamela) and great grandson, Bennett of Lexington, SC; his sister, Ann (John) Smith of Newberry; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be led by Pastor Jeff Barlow at 3:00 PM on Monday, September 20, 2021 at College Street Church in Newberry with visitation prior from 1 – 2:30 PM. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Newberry Memorial Gardens.
