Obituary

Robert Louis (Bob) Shealy, died on December 7, 2020, at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patsy Ann Hawkins Shealy. He is also survived by two sons, Michael (Laurah) and Robby (Dawn), four grandchildren, Andrew (Kathleen), Grace, Bartlett (Mallory), and Betsy (Kelsey), and two great grandchildren, Robbie and Artie. His surviving siblings are Charlie Shealy, Annette Stuck, Albert Shealy, Nancy DiMascio and Peggy Frick. Bob was predeceased by siblings, Billy Shealy, James Carroll "Shot" Shealy, Wendell Shealy and John Shealy. Bob is the son of the late Willie Evans and Nettie Geneva Ballington Shealy. He was born in Chapin, South Carolina on June 5, 1934 and was the second of 10 children. He attended Chapin schools, graduating from Chapin High School in 1952. After graduation, he worked a summer at CN & L railroad as a depot agent. At the end of the summer, he went to work for the South Carolina Tax Commission and enlisted into the United States Army in 1954. Following his two years of military service, Bob enrolled in Newberry College in 1956 and graduated with a degree in business and economics. He was a successful athlete at Newberry College, lettering in baseball all four years of his collegiate career and being well known for his sweeping left-handed curve ball as a pitcher. On September 7, 1957, Bob married the love of his life, Patsy Ann Hawkins Shealy. From the day of their marriage until the day of Bob's death, rarely were they apart from each other more than several hours. Always a team, their dedication to each other, to their community and to their church is an example to be emulated. Following graduation from Newberry College, Bob went to work for Citizens Home Insurance Company, a division of Newberry Savings and Loan Association. In 1961 he began work with Farm Bureau insurance remaining with the company until retirement in May of 1993. Bob was presented the Staff Distinguished Service Award by the South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation in 1992. "Bobby", as his Farm Bureau friends called him, particularly enjoyed consulting with farmers across the state to determine the proper level of causality coverage. He much preferred a face-to-face meeting with a farmer in their field rather than sitting behind a desk. Bob was active in civic affairs throughout his life. He served as the first Chief of Chapin's Volunteer Fire Department. He served three terms on the Chapin Town Council, was instrumental in establishing water service for the Town of Chapin and was instrumental in obtaining local dial telephone service for Chapin's inclusion in the Columbia area. In recognition for his service to the Town of Chapin, Bob was inducted into the Chapin Hall of Fame in 1999. From 1966 to 1972, Bob served as a member and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Lexington Richland School District #5. He was pleased about the successful and peaceful integration of Chapin schools. During his tenure, Bob, against the recommendation of consultants, effectively fought for a high school to remain in Chapin and helped identify the land upon which Chapin High is located. Today, Chapin High School is recognized as one of the most academically distinguished public schools in the state. In 2019, Bob was inducted into the Chapin High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his scholastic performance on the gridiron, the diamond, and the court. Bob was a devoted member of Mount Horeb Lutheran Church and served the church as a member of Church Council, a Sunday School teacher, an offering teller, and a worship usher. In recent times, including last year, Bob served as an usher for funerals at Mount Horeb. After retirement, Bob discovered another call to service in his community and began delivering Meals on Wheels to elderly clients in the Chapin area. He received great joy from delivering a big smile and a warm greeting along with a hot meal. For his service to the food program, the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission named him an outstanding volunteer in 2008. The family expresses their sincere thanks to the many family members and friends who ministered to Bob during his passage through dementia and to Betty Pelletier, ANP of Chapin Family Practice and Rachel Rister, RN of Lutheran Hospice.
