Obituary

Robert Cecil Harmon 85 of 1572 Bush River Road Newberry died Wednesday July 6 2011 at his residence. Mr. Harmon was born on April 23 1926 in Newberry County a son of the late Luke Roberson Harmon and Virda Mae Koon Quinton. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He was a retired employee of Greenwood Mills. Mr. Harmon was a member of St. James Lutheran Church where he previously served on Church Council. He was also an Honorary Life Member of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary Auxiliary. He loved gardening fishing and hunting. He was also a family man that loved being around people. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years Narvice Wise Harmon; daughter Gail Harmon (Von) James; son-in-law Roger Dean Smith; grandchildren John Clay Taylor and girlfriend Julene Neugent and Robert Daniel James and girlfriend Brooke Roper; step-granddaughter Shannon (Steven) Hendrix; step-great-grandchildren Marie and Dustin; a sister Margie (Wayne) Epting of Leesville and a sister-in-law Anna Mae Harmon of Huntington WVA. He was predeceased by a daughter Miriam Faye Harmon Smith and brother John F. Harmon. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday July 9 at St. James Lutheran Church by the Rev. Rodney Gunter. Interment with military honors did follow at Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry. Active pallbearers were Clay Taylor Robert James Carlis Epting Eric Epting Brice Swygert Fred Harmon Paul J. Harmon and Don Richardson. Honorary pallbearers were his nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to St. James Lutheran Church 228 Jalapa Road Newberry SC 29108; or to Hospice Care of the Tri-County 13795 CR Koon Highway Newberry SC 29108.
