Robert Dale Haggard "Bob", 86, of Chapin died on July 14, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Born in Windsor, Missouri on July 26, 1933, he was the son of the late Henry Mote and Mildred Vivian Grother Haggard.
Robert graduated in 1951 from Windsor High School. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Central Missouri State University and Master of Arts Degree in Public Administration from Webster University. He was a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity. After graduation from college, he was Band Director at Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, MO.
Robert volunteered for the draft and entered the US Army December 6, 1954. After a brief hiatus to complete his education, he re-entered military service by enlisting in the US Air Force in July, 1961. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1962 upon completion of Officer Training School in Lackland AFB, Texas and designated a Distinguished Military Graduate. While in the Air Force, he was one of the original participants of the Minuteman Missile Program. In 1966 he transferred back to the US Army. During his career, he served tours of duty in Turkey, Korea and combat duty in Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal while he was commanding officer of the 516th Personnel Service Company near DaNang, Vietnam. He was also awarded a Joint Service Commendation Medal. Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal for Outstanding service in Military Intelligence at Fort Bragg, N.C. He retired from the US Army having attained the rank of Major and completing 24 years of service.
He was a member of the American Legion with over 20 years of continuous service. In Ft. Campbell, KY he served on the executive committee and was elected to First Vice Commander serving two and half years in that position. Upon moving to Chapin, S.C, he joined the American Legion Post 193 and served as Commander for 2007-08. Robert valued service to others and participated in many community service projects through the American Legion, Habitat for Humanity and St. Leo's Catholic Church.
Among his survivors are his wife of 64 years, Ellen Hayden Haggard; children, Teresa Diane Haggard of Charlotte, NC, Kristen Kaye Haggard of Huntersville, NC, and Robin Haggard Lowman and son-in-law Michael Todd Lowman of Irmo, SC; five grandchildren, Lauren Perkins, Zachary Beasley, Robert Lowman (Ellen), Morgan Lowman and Austin Haggard; three great grandchildren, Hayden Perkins, Dylan Perkins and Jaxson Lowman; and family friend who was like a son, Daniel G. Hollingsworth.
Funeral services with military honors will be at 12 Noon on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
