Obituary

Robert B. "Bobby" Johnston, 72, of Newberry, died Friday, October 13, 2017 at his residence. Born on March 24, 1945, he was a son of the late W.P. Johnston, Sr. and Katie Brooks Johnston. Bobby was a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and he was a retired supervisory with Wal Mart fleet maintenance. He was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church. Bobby loved his God, his family, and his country. He was a humble man who had a great sense of humor and would help anyone who needed help. His favorite quote was" Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" and his friends would often hear him say "I'm doing alright". He is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Nancy Stroud Johnston who he enjoyed spoiling; sons and their wives, Bob and Andrea Johnston of Lexington, and Mark and Kathleen Johnston, Jason Johnston, and Wesley and Melissa Johnston all of Newberry; grandchildren, Madison Harris, Tiffany Johnston, Scott Johnston and his wife Kaley, Alisha Johnston, Michael Johnston, Blythe Johnston, Peyton Johnston, and Abby Johnston; 5 great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Martha Suber and her husband, Walter; sisters-in-law, Maderriel, Deloris, Myra, Kathy, Linda, and Lallie; brothers-in-law, Hagen Stroud and Ted Waites; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, W.P. Johnston, Jr; father-in-law, Luke Stroud; brothers-in-law, Sam Savage, Pearly Garland, Eddie Stroud, and nephew, Billy Johnston, III. Visitation will be on Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 6:00 until 7:00 PM at the Whitaker Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Smyrna Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dan Ratchford. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Fisher House Foundation, Inc., 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850. Active pallbearers will be his nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be David Dennis, Alain Dennis, Jimmy Longshore, Ryan Dickert, and the Elders of Smyrna Presbyterian Church.
