Robert Wilder Martin, 87, of Chapin, South Carolina, died on Thursday, August 20, 2026. He was born in Illinois on July 24, 1939 to the late Robert Martin and Mary Collins Martin.
Before his retirement, Robert dedicated 30 years of service as an engineer with the USDA, where he meticulously restored natural wood bridges across Wisconsin. His commitment to public service continued as he worked with the IRS on behalf of the State of Wisconsin. Fueled by a lifelong entrepreneurial spirit, Bob proudly partnered with his sons in 2001 to found Trac III Systems. Together they built and operated the National Motor Fuel Diversion Registry (fueltrac.us), a testament to his vision and dedication which he successfully ran until retirement in 2021.
He was a devoted member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, finding peace and solace in scripture and sharing his faith with friends and family.
Bob found immense joy in working with computers and was known for being able to solve complex problems. In his leisure time, he nurtured his love for the great outdoors, often camping at various Wisconsin State Parks—Peninsula State Park being his favorite.
Robert is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ruth J. Martin; his children from his first marriage to Patricia Cole: Lori Martin, Scott (Cathy) Martin, Bryon (Claudia) Martin, Cory (Simone) Martin and Heather Biederman; stepson, Benjamin Minor; and 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He is also survived brother; and stepbrother, Steve (Donna) Turpin, stepsister, Mary (John) Weston; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Steve Turpin and his brother James “Jed” Edward Martin.
The family will gather for a time of visitation, Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 3:00PM until 5:00PM, at Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.
