Rodney F. Epting, 79, of Prosperity died Thursday, September 9, 2021. He was born in Prosperity on February 25, 1942, a son of the late Robert "Bob" F. and Trudie Bedenbaugh Epting.
Rodney was a long-time member of Zion United Methodist Church. Rodney's faith was an integral part of his character, and he actively participated in helping with the needs of the church by serving on and chairing numerous committees. Rodney was also an active member of Chapin Presbyterian Church and the Men's Bible Study group. He was currently worshiping at the Newberry ARP Church.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from USC and worked for Shakespeare Company for more than 30 years, serving as plant manager for a number of those years.
Rodney was a charter member of Mid-Carolina Country Club and a member of the Mid-Carolina Lions club. He was an avid golfer, Master Gardner and had a passion for flying. He was a member of the Newberry Pilots Association and found joy taking family and friends on different excursions in his Cessna 150.
Rodney and Margaret were members of the Newberry Dance Club and enjoyed dancing and fellowship. He also loved to travel and the two of them, along with others from Newberry, had the opportunity to travel abroad on several occasions. Perhaps one of his favorite places to visit was Monticello, a combination of history, engineering, and fond family memories.
Through and through, Rodney was an inventor. He liked to study things and was genuinely curious about how things worked. He loved to tinker and a common saying was "Wait, don't throw that out." He found new and creative uses for what some would find old and worn out. He used his creativity to bring joy and laughter to others, making up songs to fit every occasion and had a wit about him to bring many a smile.
Rodney is survived by his wife, Margaret McCaughrin Musselwhite Epting; daughters, Lee Epting Koon (Jay) and Sheron Epting Quattlebaum (Daniel); grandchildren, Jaylee Koon, Leila Kate and Hannah Quattlebaum; sister, Jenny Epting Braswell (Jimmy); nephew, Christopher D. Epting (Annie); step-children, Mac Musselwhite (Jenn) and Emory Musselwhite Langston (Rion); and step-grandchildren, Rion Abbott Langston, and Andy, Jack, and Catie Musselwhite.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Merle Bedenbaugh Epting, a brother, Christopher R. Epting and an infant brother, Terry Holland Epting.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Seth Yi at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at the Newberry ARP church. Burial will follow in Zion United Methodist Church, Prosperity.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
