Rosalyn Sanders Underwood 88 of 2614 Pondview Circle Newberry died Wednesday June 9 2010 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born on March 19 1922 she was a daughter of the late Ambrose Virgil and Lottie Mae Bedenbaugh Sanders and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Underwood was a 1939 graduate of Newberry High School. She attended Newberry College and graduated from nursing school at Spartanburg General Hospital. Upon completing her nursing degree she entered the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps and served until the end of World War II. She also practiced nursing at Roper Hospital in Charleston Greenville General Hospital and with her husbands medical practice. She was a member of Newberry County Memorial Hospital Medical Auxiliary and the Newberry American Legion Post 24. She was a dedicated volunteer with Palmetto Health Hospice and was recently honored for generously giving one thousand hours of volunteer service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Newberry. Mrs. Underwood was a loving mother and grandmother. She touched the lives of many people and was loved by all who met her. She is survived by her children and their spouses Patricia Laurence of Atlantic Beach Florida Nancy Underwood of Newberry Elizabeth Underwood of Columbia Jeanne and Mike Cavanaugh of Columbia James A. Underwood III and Sherry of Newberry and Julie and C.B. Boland of Little Mountain; six grandchildren and their spouses Kathryn and Eric Ashton Ben and Lucy Boland Zach Cavanaugh Jay Underwood Laura Boland and Kelsey Underwood; sisters-in-law Ida Underwood of Newberry Mary Louise Sanders of Milltown NJ and Gertrude Sanders of Chapin; a number of nieces and nephews and a special niece Joye Mabry of Chapin. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years Dr. James A. Underwood Jr. her son-in-law Pete Laurence and her six brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 PM Sunday at First Baptist Church in Newberry by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment with Military Honors will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home Newberry. Pallbearers will be Mike Cavanaugh Charles C.B. Boland Ben Boland Zach Cavanaugh Jay Underwood and Eric Ashton. The family wishes to acknowledge the medical professionals with whom Mrs. Underwood and her husband worked with over the years the people at Palmetto Health Hospice and all of her friends at Springfield Place.
