Ruby Ethel Barrett Long formerly of Prosperity died Saturday October 10 2015 at White Oak Manor. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 pm Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Prosperity conducted by the Rev. Michael Price. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Born on July 5 1934 in Chapin she was the youngest child and only daughter of the late Henry Albert and Aarie Bickley Barrett. She was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church where she was active in the Women of the ELCA and served as a Sunday School teacher for countless years. Mrs. Long served as church secretary for Summer Memorial Lutheran Church for a number of years. She retired from Wachovia National Bank. Grandmama Ruby was the neighborhood taxi driver and care taker for the children driving the children to and from school serving them delicious foods when they arrived at her house and often mending and sewing for them. She was married to the late Carl Evans Long for 45 years. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Carlotta L. and Bart Chapman of Little Mountain; grandchildren William Barrett Rett Chapman and fiance Sadee Alexander and John Carlton Chapman; a number of nieces and nephews including Debra Long Ruff Paula Long Pridgen and Lisa Long Riley. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by her brothers Samuel George Robert and Lewis Barrett. Pallbearers will be Rett Chapman Carlton Chapman Brandon Shealy Nathan Shealy Davis Riley and Ronnie Pridgen. Memorial are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church PO Box 188 Prosperity SC 29127.
