Obituary

Ruth Sumner Hamilton 75 of Newberry died Monday August 17 2015 at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday August 19 2015 at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dewain Phillips and Rev. Mark Wilkes. Interment will follow at Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will be at her residence 907 Lindsay Circle Newberry. Born on November 13 1939 in Union she was a daughter of Savanah Shaw Sumner of Newberry and the late Sonny Sumner. Ruth attended Old Time Holiness Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for more than 20 years. Along with her husband she was owner of the former Hamiltons Grocery. She was a caring and compassionate person who loved the Lord. She was lovingly referred to by most as Granny Ruth and was well-known far and wide for her homemade biscuits. In addition to her mother she is survived by her husband of 59 years Robert D. Hamilton; son Barry Hamilton (Jackie) of Newberry; grandchildren Julie Lawing (Jon) Robbie Hamilton (Erica) Rebecca Hamilton and Richard Hamilton (Chasity); seven great-grandchildren including Brady Hamilton Black who spent lots of time with her over the past 6 years; and siblings Lillie Mae Sample Vivian Long (Ray) and James Pop Sumner (Pam). She was predeceased by a son Ricky Hamilton; a daughter Joanne Hamilton Nichols; and a sister Judy Wise. On line condolences may be sent to the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com.
