Obituary

Ruth Webster McCrackin-Leland 96 of Newberry died Sunday November 9 2014 at Newberry Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Ralph Hill at 2:00 PM on Friday November 14 2014 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home. Born in Gaffney SC on September 20 1918 she was a daughter of the late William Monroe Webster and Edna Bird Webster. She was a graduate of Furman University and received her Masters degree from the University of South Carolina. During WWII Ruth worked in the State Department in Washington DC. From Washington she moved to NY City where she worked as nutritional director with the American Red Cross Central Queens Chapter until the end of the war. She worked as an educator and a media specialist in the Joanna schools as well as Mid Carolina High School and Laurens High School. She taught home economics and art at Old Mt. Zion Institute in Winnsboro Ruth was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. She was an avid gardener belonged to the Nosegay Garden Club and was recognized as a Landscape Critic. Additionally she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century the Newberry Fine Arts Club the Librarian Honor Society and numerous bridge clubs. She was first married to the late Joseph Thaddeus McCrackin Jr. for 45 years and second to the late William Bill Leland of Charleston and Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. McCrackin-Leland is survived by her children J. Thad McCrackin III and his wife Gena of Beaufort William W. McCrackin and his wife Tanya of Chapin and Laurie McCrackin King and her husband Bill King of Lexington; grandsons Will McCrackin Thomas McCrackin and William Wyman King IV; step-children William Baker Leland Jr. and his wife Emily Richard Leland and Henrietta Leland Whelchel and her husband John; and step-grandchildren. . In addition to her parents and husbands she was predeceased by her brother Max B. Webster. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Ralph Hill at 2:00 PM on Friday November 14 2014 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Will McCrackin Thomas McCrackin William Wyman King IV Jack Brooks Bob Brooks Mac Brooks Bill Parr and Kenneth Brooks.
