Dr. Samuel Jesse “Jack” Marsh, 89, of Chapin, South Carolina, died Sunday, February 8, 2026.
Born December 8, 1936, in Kingstree, South Carolina, he was a son to the late Jesse J. Marsh and Mary Elizabeth Snowden Marsh.
Growing up on his family’s farm in Williamsburg County, he graduated valedictorian of his class from Indiantown High School. He was a four-year letterman in both basketball and baseball; as well as attended Boys State. In his Senior year, he was the State President of the Future Farmers of America.
At the completion of his Junior year at Presbyterian College, he was accepted at the School of Dentistry of the Medical College of Virginia where he graduated in 1962 with a D.D.S. Degree. Dr. Marsh then completed his residency in Pediatric Dentistry at MCV in 1964, and moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where he started the first dental practice limited to the treatment of children in the midlands. As the practice grew, it became Drs. Marsh, Sasnett, Cross and Raines. He retired after fifty years of practice in June of 2014.
Dr. Marsh served as President of the South Carolina Dental Association and The Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry. He was a fellow in the American College of Dentists, as well as The International College of Dentists.
A lifelong Presbyterian, he served as an elder, deacon and scoutmaster at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Columbia. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina where he was secretary and chairman of the planning committee.
Dr. Marsh was first married to the late Marian Stuckey Marsh. In 1979, he married Tommie Smoak Marsh.
A man of many interests, he flew sailplanes, hiked, hunted and fished. He took several hunting trips to Argentina and Central America, as well as a fishing trip to Cuba. He and Tommie also went on sailing trips to the Virgin Islands and the Leeward Islands. He and his wife Tommie collected country antiques and enjoyed many trips to New England to search for items to add to their collection. He also collected antique duck decoys and was a published author of articles on decoys.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Tommie Marsh; sons, T. David Marsh (Susan), and Samuel Michael Marsh; grandchildren, Justin Marsh (Danielle), Amy Bokelman (Jimmy), Caitlin Marsh, Laura Marsh; as well as his great-grandsons, Keenan, Ronan, Beckham and Luka Bokelman. He was predeceased by his son, T. Bly Triplett.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm on Monday, February 16, 2026, at Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.
Graveside Services will follow at 3:00 pm, Monday, February 16, 2026, at Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Rd, Columbia, SC 29212. Officiated by Rev. Jason Hunt.
