Obituary

Sarah Withers Keesee, 95, of Salisbury, NC died Tuesday, October 2, 2018. She was a resident of the Heritage at Lowman in White Rock, S.C., at the time of her death. Sarah was born on December 30, 1922. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Roscoe Withers and Sallie Mattox Withers, sisters Martha Withers Agner and Alene Withers Ritchie; brothers B.R. "Buck" Withers, George Wesley Withers, and Dr. Abner Carr Withers. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Withers Smith of Salisbury, NC; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Shoaf Withers of Conyers,, Ga. and Lynn Clarke Withers of Morganton, NC; daughter, Margaret "Dinah" Keesee Pinner (Dr. Carroll) of Peak, SC; granddaughter, Jennifer Pinner Edwards (Greg) with children Jackson Edwards and Alexander Edwards of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandson, Dr. Benjamin Carroll Pinner with children James Pinner, Charlie Pinner, and Madelyn Pinner of Peak, SC and grandson, Davis Christopher Pinner of Peak, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. A member of the "Greatest Generation", Ms. Keesee was born and raised in Spencer, NC – then the main repair hub for the Southern Railroad. Upon graduation from Spencer High School, Ms. Keesee began work as a switchboard operator for then Southern Bell. She had advanced to the position of Plant Assigner before her retirement, having been the first female to accomplish an engineering position at that level in NC. Ms. Keesee was the senior sibling of a formidable group of seven. An independent woman who displayed steely strength, a sharp wit and a deep love of family, she was a genealogist, community activist, lively pianist, creative knitter, knowledgeable collector of antiques, voracious reader and an artist in many mediums. She and her sister Martha Agner were a dynamic duo of history detectives who helped the Withers family connect to their roots from the days when genealogy was traced for years with pencil and paper rubbings from cemeteries. A private service will be held in Salisbury, NC. The family suggest memorials to Rowan Public Library, 201 W Fisher Street, Salisbury, NC 28144 or charity of one's choice. Whitaker Funeral Home of Newberry is assisting the family.
