Obituary

William "Scott" Ritchie died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on November 28, 2021. Scott is survived by his wife, Lisa Hahn Ritchie; daughters, Emily Ritchie Conley (Darren) and Jillian Ritchie; sister, Jennifer Ritchie Sexton (Chuck); brother, Dr. Michael Ritchie (Kathy); stepsons, Adam Newman and Daniel Newman (Lucy); grandchildren, Sebastian and Isla, and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, William Ritchie, and his mother, Nancy Kendrick Ritchie. Scott was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, cousin, and friend to all who knew him. He was known for his sense of humor and kindness and brought so much joy and laughter to all of those around him, even in his final days. His smile, his humor, his love, his words and his presence, always communicating that "Everything is gonna be ok," will be greatly missed. Scott was an avid sports fan. He loved watching Clemson football and trips to Death Valley. He also had a love for baseball which led him to coaching for the Sarasota Babe Ruth Baseball League in Sarasota, Florida. One of Scott's greatest passions was music, particularly the blues, and he was an excellent song writer and guitarist. He brought hours of happiness to his family and friends with his songs and beautiful singing voice. While in college, he and his brother Mike wrote some original material, along with covers, and The Ritchie Brothers Band was born. Upon returning home to Aiken, Mike and Scott decided to start a new band named the Scott Hollywood and the Hunky Numbers. During the late 1980s, the band changed its name to Crude Blues. The band performed as the opening act for several well-known artists, most notably The King of the Blues, BB King. In 1999, Michael, Thomas, and Joseph Ritchie, all nephews of Scott, joined the band and in the following 15 years, the band focused on playing a few events a year, primarily promoting Summer and Christmas Jam events, which they used to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. Scott was proud of his work as a civil engineer. He was a 1977 graduate of Wade Hampton Academy in Orangeburg and earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering from Clemson University in 1982. He had a distinguished career having practiced in numerous states as well as in Canada, and he was licensed as a Professional Engineer in South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, California, and the Province of Alberta (Canada). He was also certified by the Green Building Certification Institute as a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Accredited Professional. At the time of his death, Scott was employed as a Project Manager with Hybrid Engineering, Inc. in Columbia. He was a member of the American Public Works Association, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Water Environment Association.
