Shelby Jean Dowd Hedgepath, 83, of Newberry passed away on July 31, 2022 at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home. Shelby was born on April 9, 1939 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Daisy and John David Dowd. She is survived by her son, Tommy Leslie Hedgepath, Jr. (Tony) and his wife Gina; grandchildren, Joshua Hedgepath (US Navy), Justin Hedgepath, Tyler Shipes, Kirby Shipes, and Kimmie Shipes; and brother, Johnny Dowd (Maryann) of Cayce. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Tommy Leslie Hedgepath, Sr. (Big T); daughter, Renee Shipes of Newberry; and a sister, Nancy Haff. Shelby was a lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church in Newberry. She was a faithful Christian woman with a huge heart and she loved doing for others. She worked 30 years in customer service helping her customers, and was a member of Friendly Fire Station 1 Ladies Auxiliary. Shelby loved baking cakes for her neighbors, friends, and relatives, and she enjoyed gardening. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 2, from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 3 at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Melvin Dominick, Kevin Looney, Allen Cox, Tim Swygert, Ken Swygert, Jimmy Lever, and Ralph Summer. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Hedgepath Outdoor Power Equipment.
