Obituary

Sonia Samia Ganchorre, 76, died Sunday, March 28, 2021 due to complications with Covid-19. Briefly in hospice care, Sonia died peacefully in her sleep. Born on October 26, 1944 in Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines, she was a daughter of the late Benito Samia and Gertrudes Baria Samia. Sonia immigrated to the United States in 1969 to teach high school in San Francisco, California. After teaching, she began working for Bank of America and Wells Fargo Bank. The care and instruction of children always remained her passion. While raising her family, she held a daycare in her home and later worked at the Child Development Center at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. After her retirement in 2000, she was active in her local parishes as a member of the Couples for Christ Handmaids of the Lord at Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Fairfield, California. She moved to the Chapin area three years ago and is a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. She was a strong-willed and independent woman who raised her daughters to be the same. She loved to go on "adventures", her motto being: "Have gas, will travel". Sonia was an excellent cook and enjoyed feeding others as a way to express love and care. She had a love for gardening and growing fresh vegetables to cook and to share with others. She is survived by her daughter, Holly Samia McGaughey and husband Donald; daughter Margaret Samia Tomilloso; and grandchildren Christian Tomilloso, Nathan Tomilloso, Darian Tomilloso, Legend Tomilloso, Fred McGaughey, and Emilia McGaughey; siblings Benito Samia Jr, Doris Samia Cheng, Rico Samia, Bing Samia, Buddy Samia, and Jaime Samia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Rodrigo Samia. Sonia will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
