Obituary

Steve Stanley Coppock, Sr., 83, of Irmo, SC met his Lord on March 13, 2018 at his residence. Mr. Coppock, also known as "Steamboat", was born in Newberry, SC on May 17, 1934, the son of the late Roscoe Coppock and Mary Etta Auton Coppock. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church of West Columbia, plant manager of Cayce Chocolate Co. and retired from Fujifilm. He was a proud veteran serving his country during the Korean War. His military service spanned 4 years in the US Air Force, 2 years in the US Army and 3 years with the South Carolina National Guard. Steve graduated from Columbia Commercial College where he served as president of his senior class. He was a sports enthusiast and a loyal Clemson fan. He was lover of shag dancing belonging to the Palmetto Shag and the Columbia Shag Clubs. Steve and his family greatly appreciated their shagging friends. One of his proudest achievements in life was becoming an Eagle Scout, Troop 65 in 1949 in Newberry, SC. He greatly appreciated the opportunity to participate in the Veterans' SC Honor Flight to Washington, DC. Steve was a loving husband, father, brother and friend to all. He was a man that never met a stranger. Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Judy Smith- Coppock of the home; sons, Steve Coppock, Jr. of Hawthorne, CA, and Andrew Coppock (Michelle) of Lexington, SC and granddaughter, Rabun Coppock; Step-daughter, LaShell Head (William) of Chapin, SC and step granddaughters, Emily and Shelby Head of Chapin, SC; brothers, Olin Coppock and Wayne Coppock (Lynn) all of Newberry; sister, Gail Doolittle (Chester) of Greenwood; and nephews, Chad and Christopher Coppock of Newberry. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Friday, March 16, 2018 at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel in Newberry, SC with Rev. Dr. Robert McCollum sharing God's final words with family and friends. Burial with military honors will take place at Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 1:30 to 3:30 PM prior to the services at Whitaker Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Chad Coppock, Jack Bryant, Troy Dixon, Frank Yonce, Robert Wiggs and Jorge Gonzales, Jr. Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758540, Topeka, Kansas, 66675-8540 or to the Alzheimer's Association (Midlands Chapter), 3223 Sunset Blvd, Suite 100, Columbia, SC 29210. His family is very appreciative of Dr. Rachel Callis-Wolfe and the staff at Ballentine Family Practice, Lynn Burkett, his caregiver during his illness, and Heart Strings Hospice and his Nurse Sue Woodall, for their love and care.
