Obituary

Sue Byrd Sitterson, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 30, 2025, with her high school sweetheart and husband of 69 years, Buck, by her side.

She was predeceased by her parents, Jessie and Joseph Byrd, two older brothers, Joseph and James, and a granddaughter, Sarah Robbins.

Born in Windsor, NC, she and Buck lived their entire lives in Eastern North Carolina, raising their young family in Robersonville, spending their pre- retirement years in Greenville, and their retirement in Bath.

Like her mother before her, Sue was an accomplished pianist that shared her gift freely over the years. She taught piano lessons first as a teenager in her hometown of Windsor and then continued in Robersonville for over 20 years. Also like her mother, she became a librarian after graduating from East Carolina University with a degree in Library Science. She was initially the school librarian at Sam Bundy Elementary in Farmville, and later, Robersonville Middle School, until her retirement. She enjoyed a lifelong love of reading, but because of her mother's and her profession, refused to ever purchase a paperback, only borrowing from libraries.

Though her personality was sweet and kind, she was a ruthless and much sought after bridge partner. She was an active member of bridge clubs in Robersonville and later in Bath.

She loved being on the water, boating and skiing in her youth. Almost all family vacations were spent in Atlantic Beach, Nags Head, Ocean Isle, or Emerald Isle. In retirement, she truly appreciated living on the waterfront in Bath for 25 years.

In addition to her husband Buck, she is survived by her daughter, Susan (Jeff); son, Thad (Chrissy); grandchildren, Jessica Carman, Leigha Haynes (Copeland), Will Faulkner (Lauren), Gracen Wright (Daniel), Berkley Sitterson, and Tanner Sitterson; great grandchildren, Jacob Robbins, Emma Hudson, Norah Haynes, Teddy Haynes, and Jude Haynes.

Services will be on Friday, December 12, 2025, 11:00 AM, in Bath, NC at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Burial and reception will follow at the church.

The family would like to thank Cypress Glen in Greenville, NC, Langston House in Clinton, SC, and Crescent Hospice of South Carolina for their care over the past two years.

Whitaker Funeral Home and Biggs Funeral Home of Robersonville, NC are honored to assist the family.
