Obituary

Thomas H. Tom Westwood 81 of Newberry husband of Betty Summers Westwood died Saturday December 6 2014 at White Oak Manor. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday December 8 at Whitaker Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Tuesday December 9 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer conducted by the Rev. Dick Weber and the Rev. Floyd Sides. Born on February 5 1933 in Newberry he was a son of the late Emerson Edward and Ruth Harrell Westwood. Tom was a graduate of Newberry College and while he supported his alma mater he was also an avid Gamecoc fan.. He was a veteran of the US Army where he served as an MP. He worked as an insurance agent with American Sentinel later John Hancock Insurance for a number of years. He was one of the founders of Newberry Hardware Inc. and was also the owner. Tom was a devoted member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where he served on Congregation Council and in numerous other capacities. He was one of the original members of the Newberry Moose Lodge. He was an avid outdoorsman who especially loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed his memberships in the Newberry Dove Club the Chappells Sporting Society and the Glymphville Hunting Club. He was also quite a craftsman who could design and make most anything. He was known for his handcrafted knives (Westwood Knives) and his handmade Turkey Calls. Tom was a family man who enjoyed spending time with all of his family and especially his grandchildren. The grandchildren will also remember his craftsmanship and the toys and other items that he designed and made for them. In addition to his wife Betty of 56 years he is survived by his children Joel Westwood of Newberry Benjamin H. and Deedee Westwood of Newberry and Anna W. and Tres Newell of Irmo; grandchildren Austin and Adam Westwood Mahala Melton and Jamie and Taylor Newell; and great grandson Jacob Inman. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Ed Westwood. Memorials are suggested to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer 1515 Boundary St. Newberry SC 29108.
